Not Romeo and Juliet, some of the greatest love stories ever come from situation comedy (sitcom) series, all the way from 1994 to 2026, all the way from store employees to detectives. So here are some of the best couples in TV series according to me, a self-proclaimed chronic sitcom watcher who craves relationships just like these.
- New Girl’s Nick and Jess
Though I’m usually not a fan of the dating-broke up-dating-again trope, these two do it so well and it works! Nick and Jess are the probably the weirdest quirkiest people on earth, and of course they started off as roomates and fell in love and broke up because Nick doesn’t believe in banks and keeps all his money in a box in the corner of his room and Jess found this weird and realizes they don’t have that much in common, which led to their iconic heart-breaking break up scene, “I love you, but what if that’s the only thing we have in common?” Luckily, after a series of serial dating for both of them, they reconciled and got back together in later season, because as different as they are, Nick “would do anything for Jess,” as he stated when he opened up a bank account for her.
- Superstore’s Jonah and Amy
Yes I am obviously a sucker for friends-to-lovers trope, and no one does it better than the two of them. Business school-dropout-in-crippling-student-debt-wannabe-activist Jonah and former-pregnant-teen-in-an-unhappy-marriage-with-a-teenage-daughter Amy may seem like an unlikely duo, but the two formed a happy relationship throughout the series, starting from Amy trying hard to tolerate his existence and Jonah trying hard to befriend her, to them forming a workers’ strike together, and finally becoming friends and later on lovers. In his life, Jonah had had many jobs that it doesn’t even fit in his resume anymore because it was too many to count, yet he stayed for 6 years as an employee in Cloud 9, the longest job he’s ever had, all because of Amy. The two opened up a whole new world for each other and have made one another a better person.
- Superstore’s Jerry and Sandra
Still from the same universe, Sandra and Jerry hold a dear place in my heart. They may be the weirdest nerdiest former-bullied-kid people and they’re definitely made for each other. Other characters in the series have speculated that “they got married to the first person who is nice to them,” and while this is definitely true, I still love them and their story nonetheless. The two really show that there is definitely someone made for you in the world, because even Sandra and Jerry found each other.
- Modern Family’s Haley and Andy
This couple is the only couple in this list who isn’t endgame, and while I’m still mad Haley ended up with Dylan instead, her relationship with Andy was the best thing ever. They cheated on their current partners multiple times with each other, and I am also a sucker for toxic-couple trope. Andy is not the usual type of guy Haley would be with, and that only made the relationship better. Andy even had considered not taking his dream job because he wanted to stay with Haley. The two had a lot of fun together throughout the relationship, and had it continued, they would’ve become Andy Bailey and Haley Bailey.
- Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Jake and Amy
Starting from a childish rivalry between these two detectives, Jake set up a “worst date ever” for him to go on with Amy after he won a bet between the two about who could make the most felony arrests in a year. The date ended with them doing a stakeout together, sharing peanuts, and pretending to be an engaged couple to catch a perp. This was the start of the spark of their romantic relationship, and after they got together, there were no unnecessary break-up plots but instead they stayed together until they’re married and have a son together! Childish-doesn’t-know-how-to-grow-up Jake and overly-serious-OCD-boring Amy make the most perfect couple, where they rub off on each other a lot. Jake started to read Harry Potter because of Amy and Amy knows everything about Ninja Turtles because of Jake.
- Friends’ Chandler and Monica
Their relationship was the original Serious Girlfriend and Childish Boyfriend trope, and it works perfectly with them. OCD Monica and Sarcastic Chandler’s relationship started with a one night stand that continuesto be a serious relationship until they’re married and adopt a twin. Even before they got together, we see Monica bossing Chandler around and him loving it, Monica crying and Chandler immediately comforts her, and their perfect dynamic continues on until the end of the series.
- Abbott Elementary’s Ava and O’Shon
Ava might be one of the most entertaining characters in sitcoms, with her witty, sarcastic, and mean personality, she even comes across as a bully to all the other characters. But her relationship with O’Shon doesn’t change any of her personalities, and it doesn’t push him away but instead pulls him closer. It’s nice to see that she still gets to be herself that we know of, with her childish and mean persona, even when she’s in a serious and mature relationship, and O’Shon knows exactly how to handle her.
